FAQs
CAN YOU DO IKEBANA IF YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE?
Yes, certainly! All beginners are most welcome. According to the Sogetsu School, Sogetsu Ikebana can be created 'anytime, anywhere, by anyone in any part of the world, and with any kind of material'.
WHAT IS THE CLASS SYSTEM AND FEE?
Class fees are inclusive of flower materials, vase and Japanese-style 'kenzan' flower holder for 'moribana' shallow dish arrangements. For 'nageire' tall vase arrangements, flower materials and vase are included.
WHERE ARE CLASSES HELD?
Group classes are held at various venues in Cairns. Updates on the latest classes appear at the top of the page. Individual classes, or classes for special occasions such as a hen night or a birthday party, can be held at private homes by prior arrangement. Feel free to get in touch –– and let the magic happen!
WHAT WILL I LEARN AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF STUDYING SOGETSU IKEBANA
In these classes, you will develop your creative expression through the basic arrangement styles and fixing techniques using a variety of vases and containers. You will learn aspects of Japanese culture in a relaxed and supportive environment. In Sogetsu Ikebana, once you have acquired the necessary skills, including rules and techniques for stem placement and angles in both 'moribana' (shallow dish) and 'nageire' (tall vase) styles, you will be able to create your own original arrangements.
The healing power and beauty of flowers and plants truly inspires, nourishing your heart and soul!
DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?
Botanical materials, scissors, and containers will all be supplied. Please bring a notebook and writing implement — and a sense of curiosity!
DO YOU HAVE TO SIT ON THE FLOOR, JAPANESE-STYLE?
No need for the lotus position or 'seiza' kneeling position here! We sit on chairs and arrange materials at a table.
CAN I TAKE THE BOTANICAL MATERIALS HOME?
Yes! You can rearrange them to make a beautiful display at home, or give them to someone else as a lovely gift.
Arrangements are usually disassembled after class to take home. The reason - aside from portability - is that recreating the arrangement is a way to practice and embody the techniques learned in class.
